Arachu Castro, PhD, MPH, chair of Public Health in Latin America at Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and member of HENA Executive Committee was appointed as an advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO) Maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health division. As such, Dr. Castro will represent Latin America in advising the WHO Director General.

Julián A. The 3rd 2020 Conference of the Society for Medical Anthropology (SMA) will be held in Havana, Cuba on March 9-12, 2020, where Arachu Castro, PhD, MPH, past SMA president, professor at Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and member of HENA Executive Committee, will preside as conference program chair. This conference will focus on work produced in Latin America on the social determinants of health, sexual and reproductive health rights, and intercultural health care.

Patty García, MD, MPH, HENA collaborator and former Minister of Health of Peru, presented at the 2019 Academy of Medical Sciences & The Lancet International Health Lecture. María Romo, MPA, HENA collaborator and Interior Minister of Ecuador, was featured in an article discussing Ecuador’s rise in consumer prices since Moreno’s abolition of fuel subsidies.
Symposium 2019: Collaborating for Action on Health Equity in the Americas
On September 9-10, 2019, HENA hosted the Symposium Collaborating for Action on Health Equity in the in collaboration with the University College London’s Institute of Health Equity (UCL-IHE). More than 70 health equity leaders and HENA members from across the Americas came together at the UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center to engage in dialog and develop action-oriented plans for improving health equity in the Americas.

The HENA executive committee elected Dr. Saenz, Costa Rican doctor, public health specialist, and former Minister of Health, to serve as committee chair. Dr. Saenz will work with HENA founding director, other committee members and HENA staff to deliver research, training and policy work to advance health equity.
